How the documents work together

  1. 1

Check your course: Confirm that your chosen Cambridge course is eligible for Gates Cambridge and is not on the excluded list. (User Guide)

  2. 2

Find your deadline: Look up your course's funding deadline in the Cambridge Course Directory (8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027) and enter it in the timeline. (Application Timeline)

  3. 3

Collect stories: Write 12 to 20 true stories and tag them to the four criteria. Check the coverage sheet for gaps, especially commitment to others and leadership. (STAR Evidence Bank)

  4. 4

Choose and brief your Gates referee: Pick someone who can address all four criteria, not a third academic referee, and send the brief and your CV early. (Referee Brief)

  5. 5

Work the four statements: Answer the recall questions in notes, plan each statement, then type every sentence yourself. No AI at any stage of the writing, including for English. (Statement Worksheets)

  6. 6

Check and submit: Run each self-check and the final checklist. Confirm the Gates Cambridge sub-section of the funding section is complete before you submit. (User Guide)

  7. 7

Prepare for interview: If nominated and invited to interview, practise the questions aloud, including open intellectual and ethical questions. (Interview Question Bank)

Questions about this kit

Can I use AI to improve my English in the Gates statements?

No. The University of Cambridge says AI must not be used for personal statements or CVs, not even to improve English. The kit gives you questions, structures and checks so you can write and revise your own text.

Does the kit contain example statements?

No. It contains recall questions, structure planners and self-checks for each of the four statements, never text to copy.

Who should be my Gates referee?

Someone of appropriate standing who can address all four Gates criteria, not a friend or relative and not an academic who simply repeats an academic reference. The Referee Brief explains the ranking and format they must use.
