Who it's for

  • Graduates from Nigeria, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Kenya or Ghana applying through their Embassy of Japan for a master's or research student place
  • Applicants who need to turn a research idea into a concrete 2-page plan
  • Applicants preparing for the first-screening written tests and interview

How the documents work together

  1. 1

Check eligibility: Confirm your nationality, your birth date against the age rule, your years of schooling and your country's extra conditions (for example India's minimum marks, Kenya's degree class). (User Guide)

  2. 2

Set your dates: When your embassy posts the new call, enter its deadline and the written-test and interview dates in the timeline. (Application Timeline)

  3. 3

Collect evidence: Record your thesis, projects, courses, lab or field skills and any publications as stories, and tag them. (STAR Evidence Bank)

  4. 4

Brief your recommender: Send the brief and your draft research theme early, so the letter can be sealed and returned before your deadline. (Recommendation Brief)

  5. 5

Build the research plan: Work through section 1, then section 2 (theme, then detailed plan). Write the plan yourself, on the current-year form. (Research Plan Worksheets)

  6. 6

Choose universities: Identify 1 to 3 universities, graduate schools and advisors that match your plan, for the Placement Preference form. (Research Plan Worksheets)

  7. 7

Check and submit: Run the self-checks and the final checklist; number each document in the top right corner; submit in the way your embassy requires. (User Guide)

  8. 8

Prepare the first screening: Practise past written papers under time limits and practise the interview questions aloud. (Interview Question Bank)

Route check

Choose this kit if you apply through the Embassy of Japan in your country (Embassy Recommendation). It does not cover the University Recommendation route, where a Japanese university nominates you. For Korea, see the GKS Graduate kit; for China, the Chinese Government Scholarship kit.

Questions about this kit

Does this kit contain a sample research plan?

No. MEXT cancels a selection if plagiarism or fraud in the research plan is discovered, so the kit gives you questions, structures and checks, never text to copy.

Are the 2027 deadlines still open?

No. The 2027-intake calls in our six countries have closed. The kit shows their dates as examples of the pattern: calls usually open around April, and each embassy sets its own deadline.

Does it help with the written tests?

Yes, with a practice plan built around the past papers MEXT publishes. The kit does not include test papers or answers.
